Just watched Where Eagles Dare for the first time after seeing Captain America. Smith (Richard Burton) tells the German officers that his real name is Johann Schmidt, the same name as Red Skull in Captain America. I read on wikipedia that this character first appeared in the comics in 1941. I wonder if Alistair MacLean borrowed this name from the Captain America comics or if Johann Schmidt is just a very common name like John Smith.

johann schmidt is literally the equivalent of john smith. Its also used in Doctor Who as a pseudonym.

The mans tongue didnt come through customs!
