I still laugh when...(spoiler, to be safe)

...the Gestapo officer comes into the room and Maj. Smith tells him he's uncovered a plot to assassinate Der Fuhrer. Ha. You can almost see the heads of everyone else in the room spinning. It's like Maj. Smith is a master of the cover story but he's really stretched to the limit at that point and decides to swing for the fences. I don't know if it was meant to be humorous but I always crack up when he says that.

LOL, I know what you mean. On the other hand it's no more funny or stretching it than when he's in the inn and says he's the brother of Himmler. I mean, what are the chances hehe?

Not if Himmler had two brothers!

Funny!

The OP makes a good point - Maj. Smith was really clutching at screws with the Fuhrer story. A risky move, because what could he have done if ANOTHER SS officer had walked into the room at that point and held everyone up?

Maj Smith "Thank goodness you're here, I've uncovered a plot to assassinate er... Churchill!"

SS Officer "Yeah... what's wrong with that?"

Maj Smith "Schmit! We've been rumbled!"

Maj Smith "Thank goodness you're here, I've uncovered a plot to assassinate er... Churchill!"

You're thinking of a different Eagle movie ha ha

I choked up my popcorn when he said that! It was like, are you FREAKIN' KIDDING ME?!?!? But sometimes the BIG LIE works better than anything else. If nothing else, it lets you know you're dealing with a basket-case, so back away slowly.

reply

Well, it does kinda work seeing as he know he's been left on a lot of information, seeing as they didn't want him to torture the guy into saying false information, so it actually wouldn't be THAT hard for him to believe, but then again, Smith doesn't know this, so he took a big chance :D

And yes, it cracked me up, big time.

THIS IS PREPOSTEROUS!!!!

The Gestapo officer was a definite hard core Nazi. Smith played on that which is why I think he said that. It worked as the Gestapo officer certainly seemed to believe it. In any event, the purpose was to distract that officer and certainly worked as he found out the hard way with a bullet from Schaeffer in his head...

i more like that he is depicted as a badass, with character developing and his "hmm i suspect this girl is a spy"..

and then they just shoot him in the head :D.

The Gestapo officer also knew something was amiss. British agents are arrested and he is not informed of it right away and the mysterious arrival of Mary certainly had gotten him very curious as to what was going on. After his date with Mary, he knew something was up. After then hearing that there was a plot to assasinate Hitler, he thought he had definitely solved the mysterious recent events.

reply

Hehe, yeah that is a great scene.

What makes it funnier is the fact that Maj Smith delivers the lines so deadpan and straight-faced that it really is "preposterous" yet in it's on cray way it works - it's probably the best part of the film for me. Wonderfully ridiculous!

“It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well.” - Rene Descartes

He really was reaching with that line but the Gestapo majors reaction was very believable in that he didn't believe it for a second and just wanted to secure the room until he finds out what is really happening.
