Damn, how much did it cost to make this?

It looks like it was expensive and it only made 7mil in America.

7 million was a lot of money back then :-}, so covered it's production many times over .

There are others sources actually that claim it made $ 17 million in the U.S. - maybe the rentals were $ 7 million. It was a pretty big hit worldwide anyway.

1968 was very far from the dark ages. Seven mil, while not exactly peanuts at that time, was nothing remarkable. Doctor Zhivago three years earlier cost 11M to make and brought in 112M domestically the year of release. Lawrence of Arabia six years earlier cost 15M to make and brought in 37M domestically the year of release.

Where Eagles Dare must have cost a pretty penny to make, with megastars Richard Burton at the peak of his career and Clint Eastwood riding very high after his two spaghetti westerns, not to mention the location and the effects, even though it didn't have David Lean, Robert Bolt, and Maurice Jarre to pay.

If it made back its cost in domestic box office, and it probably did, it would be because after all, it had only a grand total of two "names" to pay, which put it in an entirely different class than the two above mentioned movies.
