is that poor Ruth Gordon had to die! Granted, walking away with her back turned to Mrs. Marrable wasn't the brightest thing to do but it would have been better had she survived and showed up with the rest of the them at the end of the movie.
I saw Scream of Fear about 6 months ago. I loved that ending! Susan Strasberg was so gorgeous, and Christopher Lee was so YOUNG! The scariest thing: Ann Todd's face.
I really enjoyed the movie, but I wanted Gordon to win SO badly. I was, like, calling "get her" and such out loud, really rooting for her. Gordon was incredibly good at portraying the determination and even love of the character, and Page was so incredibly good at portraying the disgusting evil, on multiple levels, of hers, that I wanted to see good triumph over evil SO badly.
But, really, the film would have been so different if I had gotten my wish. They couldn't have had anything like the ending they had, and Gordon's winning that fight would've been kinda contrary to the point of the whole film.
Some scenario in which, yeah, Gordon lost the fight but somehow *survived* it (and the car trip, or the attempted drowning, somehow...) might've worked. But, really, Page's evil is complete only if she gets Gordon.
The very title of the movie pretty much tells you that the odds don't favor whoever turns out to be Aunt Alice...
Still, in the moment of watching that scene, I wanted Gordon to win SO badly!
I couldn'ta said it better myself, Mathew! I wanted Gordon to win too! But, you make some pretty good points as to how that would have altered the whole story.
I agree with the sentiment of wanting to see Aunt Alice survive, and I think it could have been achieved in an effective way. The film lost some power with her NOT surviving.
Unfortunately, I think you may be right. It's regretful to think now, b/c it's been done though. So, I just have to try and like it for what it is---otherwise, I'm tempted to hate it, which I don't want to do.
I agree, I kept expecting Ruth Gordon to pop up alive at the end with the idea that some sort of trap had been set. I also think that the previous housekeepers had to be a bit dense when it came to planting the pine trees. Who plants trees in that size and shape hole?
That type of 'Hollywood ending' would've ruined it. I mean, no one wants to see Ruth Gordon die but she wasn't a killer. She went from self defense to attempting to flee.
What I didn't care for was the little uppity, overacting, wise-ass kid.
I hated the ending , especially after sitting through Geraldine Pages agonizing drivel of a performance . I mean she sets the neighbors house on fire and tries to kill them while leisurely going to sleep for the night and nobody disturbs her then they let her rant when shes finally caught and whats with the kid giving the bitch back the stamps. I wanted someone to beat the crap out her and plant her in the ground. Unsatisfying ending . 0 of 10
"So, a thought crossed your mind? Must have been a long and lonely journey"
"I wanted someone to beat the crap out her and plant her in the ground."
Ha ha. That made me laugh. I disagree with you, though, about Page. Her deliberately over-the-top performance was the ONLY interesting aspect of this poorly written/made film. HAD there been more for Ruth Gordon to do, her performance might have been interesting, as well.
