Camp classic

Jeez, this ticks all the boxes. Mad-haired, hissy broad, drunk before lunch, genteely nasty ... bashing her be-wigged housekeeper ... murdering lovely Milly Dunnock after criticising her barmaid skills ... over-bouffed niece after her inheritance...

What fun Page and Gordon must have had making this! Must have been like two weeks in an adult's funhouse.

Has anyone read the book on which it's based?

I've read the Ursula Curtiss book THE FORBIDDEN GARDEN and it is definitely worth a look if you come across it, though I would say that this is one of those occasions when the movie is an improvement on the book.

Over-coiffed niece had bedroom scene that hit the cutting floor unfortunately...'in your eyes' liet-motif's great throughout...

There's a bedroom scene (of the non-sexual variety) featuring Julia in my copy - she's on the phone (vile gold-and-ivory thing) lounging against her equally vile brass headboard and toying with her bleached-out tresses. Is this the scene you mean or is there another?

reply

I've run across a still publicity photo from the film of this bedroom scene but her hubby is in the bed with her... like Marrabel's husband in the casket it was probably cut from the feature :(

Frequently with lobby cards/publicity photos they use images that were never actually in the film.

This was a very entertaining movie to me. Just watched it (recorded from cable). The performances were great, especially from Geraldine Page and Ruth Gordon.

In my opinion, i wouldn't call this "camp". There are some things the characters do and some scenes that raises questions, but overall i would say this is a good drama (or even dark comedy). If you really want to see, in my opinion, a real campy movie, check out: "Sharon's Baby" (1975). Also known as "I Don't Want to Be Born" or "The Devil Within Her". Check this movie out with some friends and get ready for some laughs, seeing a movie taking itself so seriously.

To see how campy this movie is, one of the titles it goes by: "Sharon's Baby", in the movie (starring Joan Collins), there is no character in the movie named Sharon, yet it had the title Sharon's Baby.
