Question about July

I think that's his name, the guy everyone shuns because he is afraid to fight.
My question is why is he allowed to tag along? Nobody likes him, not even Col.Langton(Sp?)My only guess is that he is a relative in some way.
I love the way he casually explains to Col. Thomas' men that he just didn't want anybody to shoot him.

He was still a Southerner and neighbor. They may have disapproved of his position on fighting, but they were not going to leave him behind.

Well, I can't answer your question (though the relative theory makes sense.) But I thought it was interesting the way the character is hated by everyone, yet at the same time the opposing sides manage to find common ground with each other. I guess the suggestion being that (ex-)soldiers can have some respect for those who fought against them for at least standing up for what they believed in, no matter how far it was from their own values. But on the other hand, those who didn't fight at all don't get any respect at all.

I was thinking along the lines he could of been a Baptist Minister from their Town and they wanted to bring along Religion. But then upon thinking I like the Idea he was just put there just to show that Neither the North or South Soldiers had respect for those who didn't want to fight for what they belived.

On a side note this is the first time I have ever seen this as far as I can tell. and I thought I had seen every John Wayne Movie ever made. Was like finding a $20 Bill the Pocket of a Coat when you are down to your last Dime and you havn't eaten in a Week.
