Lacks a strong villain figure.

THE UNDEFEATED usually gets slagged as one of John Wayne's worst westerns, which is a trifle unfair. But the movie really lacks a strong villain figure. You never see Maximillian's supporters do anything cruel, General Rojas clearly doesn't regard shooting women and children with relish, and once he gets what he wants, he actually lets the Americans off fairly easily, considering that the Wayne and Hudson characters were technically supporting an illegitimate government. And Wayne and Hudson do foolishly interfere in another country's business in their different ways not thinking over that they could get bitten in their asses.
