Can anybody explained the different count of the horses at varuos times?

Well it starts out at three thousand, and ends up at two thousand five hundred. And John Wayne's character makes reference to having lost five hundred along the way, so it all adds up?

As to why they should lose 500, I think it would be an achievement not to lose more for a journey that long.

some were probably stolen by Indians, some stolen by wild stallions, some lost, some injured, some died....

I'd like to know where they found them
