Who Are The Good Guys And Bad Guys?

Let's see, Maximillian's agent gives the Duke a better offer for his horses than the crooked American agents buying for the US Army.
The Juaristas hold hostage Rock Hudson's men women and children and threaten to shoot them unless Hudson persuades the Duke to renege on his deal to sell the horses to Maximillian, and give the horses to the Juaristas.

I realize Mexico was at this time a French colony and Maximillian was the bad guy while the Juaristas were Mexican revolutionaries fighting for a free Mexico. However, these freedom loving revolutionaries were prepared to murder innocent people who were not involved in this horse trade.

Who are the good guys and bad guys here? If you were in the Duke's boots, who gets the horses, the colonialists with whom you made a fair deal with, or home grown, freedom loving peasant army who nevertheless is ready to commit murder?

Wasn't this the underlying point of many films of a certain era?

A ripping good yarn with an underlying morality tale questioning just what makes who the good guys and the bad guys.
