We all know John Wayne's politics at the time. Yet he chose to co star with a man he had to know, was a homosexual. Im sure he had to know. I wonder why he did it, and what he thought of co starring with Rick Hudson.
or maybe the Duke was more tolerant than davey gives him credit for. Merely appearing with gay performers does not make an actor gay. George Peppard, Gig Young, Rod Taylor, Robert Stack, Sidney Poitier were all straight actors who appeared with Hudson and cannot be tarred with little davey's brush.
Wayne was even known to have sex with teenagers on his yacht
known by whom, davey boy? never mentioned by any of those boys or crew members. never discovered by a snooping reporter or a probing biographer. only known by you -- already a proven liar.
guess you and the other draft dodgers at that rally were the only ones to see that picture, little davey. It has never surfaced anywhere else. Perhaps someone created it to sell it to you so that you could have momentary physical pleasure over it, before fleeing the country.
really, stear? But davey told us he was born in 1947 and later fled to Europe to avoid the draft. Do you mean to say that he has been --- deceiving us all this time? Gee whiz, now I won't be able to believe anything he tells us here. Wayne's politics, Stewart's sex life, Burton's smoking, Elvis' music, Peck's acting, Clint's safe movies .... I am really disillusioned now. What is a guy to believe in anymore? If only davey had been honest with us...
Wayne was even known to have sex with teenagers on his yacht -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That was the rumor about Errol Flynn. Davey Boy just transfer the rumor from Flynn to Wayne. All Big John did on his yacht was drink and fish.
It's a silly question to even ask and rather sad. Obviously, you know little about John Wayne. Yes, we all know about his politics and he was not afraid to cast unpopular opinions, but he was a true professional in every sense of the word. He appeared with many left wing liberals in his time (who were less tolerant of him than he was of them). As for gay actors? Remember "Red River?" Who was his co-star there? "The Alamo?" Who played Colonel Travis? "The Alamo" was the Duke's movie all the way (he prodoced , directed and was the driving force for getting it made). He could have quashed the casting of an actor if that kind of thing bothered him. Actually, he knew very well about Rock Hudson's sexuality. Always admired Hudson's professionalism. He did remark "Look at those good looks. All wasted. What I could have done done with a look like that!" John Wayne was much more tolerant than people realize when it came to people's PROFESSIONAL lives. Read any one of the many biographies about him.
I when I first found that John Wayne was ok with working with Rock Hudson and that he didn't have a problem with Rock being gay. I was shocked by this and the account of I thought I knew about John Wayne enough for someone like Wayne who was a ridged conservative to embraced Rock Hudson it bothered me greatly. I thought Wayne had gone soft on me. For while I held the belief that John Wayne condoned homosexuality since he was so settle with Hudson having been gay. I still wonder what John Wayne’s position was on this issue. Did he or did not approve homosexuality?
Rock Hudson's orientation was the worst-kept secret in Hollywood. Yes, the Duke was aware. Despite Duke's strong beliefs, he wasn't opposed to reaching out to people with different views. He was good friends (I have been told) with Liberals, for example.
Even's Wayne's strongest critics will admit he was a classy man.
True, crestviewfarms. It's only the raving Waynephobes who spread the trashy, unsupported rumours about the Duke, and they aren't critics, they are wingnuts. They lack the intelligence to offer any true, dispassionate criticism, so instead they spread filth and bovine excrement.
"It ain't dying I'm talking about, it's living!!!" Augustus McCrae
According to Andrew McLaglen, the director of the movie, and the son of long time friend, and fellow Ford Stock Company member Victor McLaglen, he not only knew, but didn't give a rat's ass.
His wife Pilar, and daughter Aissa also verified that he knew, and didn't give...well, you get the picture.
He a Rock weren't friends prior to making this picture, but became friends WHILE making the picture, and remained really good friends until JW died.
He did NOT care one bit about your sexual orientation, so long as when you showed up for work you "hit your mark," knew your lines, and DID YOUR god &@#^ job...
I believe that Wayne wanted to make good movies and preferred working with great actors/actresses who were professional. When he was producing a movie, he was concerned with all of the above, plus grossing a good profit. I don't think he'd have cared about Hudson's sexual preference (which as previously mentioned, was one of Hollywood's worst kept secrets).

That'd be how I'd imagine the Duke to be...a professional all the way.

Wayne didn't approve of homosexuality and did mouth off with homophobic remarks from time to time in the Fifties, but age also mellowed him a little, and basically by the Seventies he didn't give a damn what you did as long as you kept it private. He didn't particularly like Montgomery Clift but liked both Laurence Harvey and Rock Hudson immensely once he got to know them. Most liberals who encountered Wayne, by the way, respected him greatly because they knew where he stood. Most of the worst things liberals put out about him only were said long after he died.
It was WELL known all over Hollywood and the entertainment industry, but NOT to the general public that he was GAY, but as far as him having AIDS, practically no one knew...
