The Undefeated - A lot seems unresolved

This film has been playing a lot recently on Encore Westerns, and in watching it a few times I keep getting the impression that it left a lot unresolved. It's a very watchable film, but it leaves me feeling like something else was unsaid.

The strange ending for one (sharing a drink with the officer who was about to execute Hudson's group, no stampede, etc) - many have commented on how it seemed as if something was missing.

Another item is the setup of some kind of relationship between the Duke and Marian McCargo's character (Ann). They telegraphed it considerably and it looked as if something was happening, but it turned out to be another loose thread.

Another was the inevitable confrontation between Roman Gabriel and Jan Micheal Vincent.

So what's the deal? Was the script unfinished at the time of shooting? Did they run out of money? Some kind of disagreement between the higher-ups?

It really looks as if there is a missing reel, or *something*. I still like the film a lot, but the more I see it the more it looks as if a big chunk was either rewritten, abandoned, or edited out.

You are right..the film ran out of money and the written ending ended up unfilmed unfortunately which went like this...

Blue Boy played by Roman Gabriel and Jan Michael Vincent ended up in a big brawl..whereby the young girl became disgusted with both..and ran off and eloped with Merlin Olsen before the Ram's training camp opened leading to discord in the Ram's locker room..and forced Merlin to purchase a little house on a prairie somewhere where he and his child bride lived for 40 years..

Ann, Marian McCargo's character, became haunted by her lack of understanding of John Henry's advice of "Windage and Elevation" to the point where she ran off and back to the Mexican General who had kidnapped her band who was drinking cognac in a morose mood after everybody left..They too became married and lived south of the border until he was hanged for war crimes...

Rock Hudson feelling betrayed by Merlin taking his daughter hooked up with John Wayne and together they swore out a warrant against him for sex with a minor seguing the movie into later years as a successful T.V. series called Law and Order SVU..

I hope this helps..
