This film is so real, there's nothing to remind you that it's a film.
It's exactly like watching real people's lives, exactly like if you were walking next to them, listening to the sounds they hear, feel what they feel.
This is a great movie that's way too overlooked.
The book is a lot different though, and set in France.
3 Women is my favorite Altman film but this one is a close second.
If you get the chance to watch it, you'll never forget it.
I agree. Just got this video on ebay for next to nothing and watched it tonight. Sandy Dennis is fantastic--such an interesting film, and none of that typical Hollywood cliche stuff (can't tell you what i mean, or i'll spoil it.)
3 Women is also my favorite Altman (Shelly Duval!)--with Nashville and Come Back to the Five and Dime... second and third. I only wish Dennis had been utlized more, though from her few classics, she definitely secured her place in the All Time Great Actresses category.
The one Altman film that really wigged me out though was Images--just too bizarre.
Now on the hunt for the other Dennis film from 69, Thank You All Very Much...
"3 Women" is probably my favourite too, oddly enough. If this thread is any guide, we might conclude that "Cold Day" should be sought by those us who liked the mood of the former ahead of, say, "MASH" or "A Wedding" or whatever.

Genius who made a very silly film in 1969, yes. The camerawork is frequently quite excellent, but the story itself is both kind of banal and ridiculous - starting with the very premise. And the ending comes off more exploitative than tragic. One needed to wait for 3 more years for Altman to get his sh-t together and deliver a truly perceptive and haunting psychodrama. This here is just a warm-up.
