i think i should know who the porter (conductor) was on the train at the beginning of the movie---exceptionally deep voice that i know i've heard before. don't see him on the full cast credits here at imdb

This one starts with James Garner riding into town on a horse. "Support Your Local Gunfighter" is the one where he arrives in town on a train.

He's correct the scene your talking about is the opening of Support Your Local Gunfighter. The guy's name you are thinking of is James Nolan.
