Hard-to-find film services
Recently, I secured a copy of "Sole Survivor" from Super Happy Fun -- they were quick and efficient. I really do wonder if the film itself is 'non copyrighted' and 'public domain' - - on the end-credits, there are two copyright logos; one clearly dated '1969'.
That said, I need to make some commentary about quality.
Firstly, the service I paid for was for the film, and at $13.00 I couldn't be dissatisfied. However, this was clearly a film copied from TV -- the breaks were clearly visible, and the "WPIX" logo appeared briefly at the lower-right (circa 1989 or so, I'd imagine).
All of this is fine -- however, as with any TV-airing, the entire film is not present. Had I not a pretty good memory, or if this film was being shown to me for the first time, I'd say that quite a bit of it made no sense -- this; due to the omission of a critical scene.
The scene in question occurs just before a commmercial break. In it, William Shatner's character makes a commentary that the starboard wing would have been full of fuel prior to the crash if there had been no crew present to effect a manual transfer of fuel. This would have caused the tail section to break off in the opposite direction of where it was found on the wreck.
The tail section of the plane is a plot-device which is used several times in the film, as one of the crewmembers is trapped beneath it. Without this scene, several of the others make no sense, and the viewer is required to try to piece the plot together mentally.
This is an old film, and I'm not risking much here by telling you all this -- most of you who read this will have seen the film anyway. My reasoning by this is twofold -- beware of buying from ANY source when you're looking for cult films; 'potluck' is what you're going to get. Secondly, if there's any possibility that this film could be re-released in its proper form -- then add my voice to the rest, and please do so!
