Lady Be Good


I served at RAF El Adem when the body of one the survivors was found in 1959. In 1996 I made the first of many trips to Tobruk where the Lady Be Good still lies. Last year 55 of us including many who were in the RAF desert Survival Teams in the 60's, returned to Libya and enjoyed the hospitality of the Base Commander and the General Officer Commanding Cyrenica. Sadly efforts to preserve the remains of the LadyBeGood in a Special Museum were moving very slowly. Jim Smith

A survivor? I am assuming you mean he survived the wreck, but not the desert? Has the airplane been moved from its crash site? A fellow in Florida claims to have one of the .50 cal removed from the airplane. I have seen a few of the bits recovered from the wreck at the USAF Museum @ Dayton.

The Libyan government removed the B24 from the desert sometime in the early or mid 1990's. Apparently it is rotting away as some police station in Tobruk. Here's a link if you want to read more:
