Remake Rumour

Rumour has it that Richard Donner has expressed an interest in remaking the film and is negotiating rights to produce it as well.

The remake will be set in Iraq , c1991, but location will be California.

Got this of my friend in NYC who freelances as a location scout for Fox.

Probably a load of hogwash, but he's been reliable so far and let's face it , it's a damn good movie worthy of a redo.

Strikes me as strange that studios can release old 'classic' twaddle films that are really quite awful yet can't slap this one on dvd and cash in on it's cult status, let alone it being a superb and haunting film.

Come on Mr Donner, prove my friend right and drop us all a line.....

My vote is that they clean up the old one and do a DVD release, and get it back on cable -- this was an excellent film, and 'redoing' it would simply LOSE the flavor of the original.

Some things shouldn't be 'redone'.

(If you want additional proof, go watch the remakes of "Flight of the Phoenix"; "The Time Machine"; "Lost In Space"; "The Manchurian Candidate"; and "Seven Days In May".

Totally agree. A remastered version of the orginal is the best option. Also another good point, so much garbage released on DVD, and they can't do this one?

reply

True but some remakes are done right. The new "Get Smart" was done very well and its FUNNY!

reply

Some, not many... Get Smart is an exception to the rule (plus is a story based on old characters, not really a remake). I've tried to watch remakes of Fog, The Omen, Poseidon's Adventure, The Clash of the Titans... Disappointing, to say the least...

Protective, Detective, Electric Eye

Let's hope this is a joke.

While the DVD is available from two sources (one a VERY painstaking, labor-of-love restoration), it's not available from a legitimate source.

Far better to restore the original - and best!

Count me in on the "why hasn't this gem made it to DVD" team. A superior TV movie with a quite original based-in-fact story to tell.

reply

well the remake idea turned into dust by the look of it, thankfully, so I guess someone somewhere shares your view on letting it be...shame they can't come up with a dvd remaster....in this day and age, how difficult can it be?

music.period.

If they ever do a remake of Sole Survivor then Vin Scully (LA Dodgers Announcer) has to make a cameo voice performance. I just re-watched this movie last night for the first time in about 20 years.
It was so eerie to hear his voice in this movie that is over 40 years old, mainly for the fact that Vin, at 83 years old is still announcing and sounds almost exactly the same today as he did back then.
