Interesting and amazing baseball facts about this movie!
There are several brief segments in the film in which The Los Angeles Dodgers and The San Fransisco Giants game was being broadcast on the radio. After doing some research on the game I have come to the conclusion that the actual game intended to be broadcasted was from April 21st 1959. The score was 7-7 in the bottom of the 9th. The pitcher mentioned by Vin Scully was Worthington and the catcher was Schmidt which was accurate as well as the score and the inning.. The only thing that didn't fit in was that Scully announced Maury Wills to lead of in the bottom of the 9th. Maury did not play in that game as the Short Stop was Zimmer.
It was stated that the Dodgers lead the season series 4 games to 3, which couldn't be possible since it was only the second meeting of the 2 teams that season. There were no other 7-7 ties in the ninth inning in either 1958 or 1959 which is when the scene had taken place. This leads me to believe that it wasn't the actual broadcast of the game but just a scripted one done specifically for the movie.
Now what's really amazing about hearing this broadcast is that by 1970 Vin Scully was already becoming an established legendary broadcaster with already 22 years experience behind the microphone for the Dodgers. Now in 2013, 43 years since the movie was made and 65 years since Scully started broadcasting, he is still announcing the radio broadcasts for the Dodgers. WOW!
