I remember the guy who discovered the wreck saying that he knew it had lain there untouched all these years, because the machine guns were still operable and if any Arab had found them, they would be gone.

If memory serves me right, around 1960 Life magazine had an extensive article on the discovery and included pages of the diary that was found. This was during the height of the Cold War and I remember the Russians saying that their airmen would never despair like these crew members did. Man, I wanted to punch someone out.
