...anyone else see this?

I would like to ask Maggie Smith how much of Professor McGonagall is based on Celia Johnson's portrayal of Miss Mackay?

Especially in the earlier Potter films she seems to be (at times) channeling Miss Mackay.

reply

I really know nothing about the Prof. M., but you'd better never ask!

reply

Why?

Artists are encouraged to draw on personal experience to deliver stellar performances.

Dame Maggie is a high-point of the Potter franchise.

reply

Poor Dame Maggie...
I think she called a great actress no less than half a century, and not some point of the fr... tran... franchise!

Well, I saw the first of H.Potter films and had enough. It was nice. The rest surely no more than - franchise?

reply

I would say "none". Frankly, I don't see it at all. I would say that Maggie Smith was channeling Professor McGonagall. She was one of a small handful of players
, especially in the first movie, who absolutely *nailed* their part and seemed to literally leap off the pages of the book and onto the screen, and seem *exactly* as I had imagined the character in my mind while reading the book. (the others were Dumbledore and Snape)

reply

Agreed.
Maggie Smith IS Miss Brodie.
