what do the scuffs on the lense mean?

i'm sure everybody noticed the scuffs of the lense of the camera. i think the big scuff at the top in the middle of the lense is a bit interferring (especially when you focused it once). i think it is another element to destroy the illusion of that what you are watching is reality (just like the "interviews" with the actors). any other ideas? [i refer to the german Arthaus edition]

That's what I would assume. There were similar moments in "Persona" a few years earlier, too, with the film appearing scratched or getting caught up in the projector.

I just watched it again last night (MGM DVD release) - didn't notice any 'scuffs' , just some light flares on lens due to the sun.
