Andreas' vision

Any ideas about Andreas' strange astronomical vision at the beginning? It appears to be 3 suns, with the largest center sun surrounded by a halo. It reminded me of the apocalyptic astronomical signs mentioned in The Seventh Seal but I'm not sure there's a connection or what the connection might be. Or perhaps it's just meant to convey something about Andreas' mental state.

i thought the halo and the other 2 suns was lens flare.

That bit was meant to be there. I'm 100% sure, else why should it have been kept in?

What to make of it, hmm... Not entirely sure, but I saw it kind of a "Sci-Fi" idea... like, it's not the world this takes place on... A bit as in RED DESERT, where it's hinted at that the film takes place on a metaphorical Mars.

I suspect this is where Bergman got his idea.

I also thought this was attributable to lens flare.

It was a sun dog, caused by ice in the atmosphere reflecting the sun. Some cultures saw it as a good sign, or incoming storms/trouble.

Wow! thanks for adding 'sun dog' (parhelion) to this discussion. I've seen all manner of ideas for what that might mean, and simply knowing it has a name that's connected to a long history of folklore is very helpful.
