When I first saw this movie in 1972 after it was re-released i had to buy the album. I loved that scene and how Rico could beat Joe in a race. The only time we see Rico clean and healthy.

Always wished this movie had happier ending.
I kind of find it sad. As he is imagining this fantasy, you keep seeing the look on Ratso's face like he is thinking "This is it! We are going to make it. After this clean health, beaches, girls and sunshine. The fun will never end!". Then Joe once again fails and Ratso realizes they ain't going nowhere. It's back to their decrepit flat. That's where I find it sad, you really feel Ratso's disappointment.
