Just wondering about the flashback scenes. Seems to hint that Joe may have been sexually abused by his grandmother?? And he was in love with a prostitute who when caught claimed he was the only one who payed him for sex??? I don't know, I'm just kinda guessing here. Can anyone clarify for me?
I do believe that Joe did have some inappropriate visits with Sally Buck and her many beaux. I think "Crazy Annie" means that Joe was the only one she loved. All the guys seemed to want Annie cuz she put out but she loved Joe. I don't know why she had to be put away. I also don't know what that scene meant when two women bring Joe back to his grandmother. Did he run away?
The two woman were sort of prostitutes during WWII. One was his mother, though he never found out which of the two was. They dumped him with grandmother, who was a beautician.
No inappropriate relationship with grandmother, other than she neglected him and left him for days while she was out with different boyfriends. Scene with her and old man in bed illustrates that she did pay more attention to Joe when she was involved with a boyfriend who paid attention to Joe a little more than her previous boyfriends did.
Crazy Annie was the town whore. She fell in love with Joe because he was good in bed...
Another scene in the book tells of an incident where Joe is held down and raped at a brothel.
Another scene in the book tells of an incident where Joe is held down and raped at a brothel. __________ I haven't read the book yet; but there are 2 flashback scenes in the film, that allude to this. It appears quite obvious, what is happening to Joe.
