Watched this movie again last night and have to agree with you.
Some shots are typically 3D like.
I'm glad someone else besides me has noticed this. In some of the early scenes (I'm especially thinking of the one where Omar Sharif and his gang all start appearing) there seems to be a unique "look" I haven't encountered in any other film. Almost as if an entirely new camera system was used.

Not 3D, but Cinerama (i.e. in ultra-wide aspect ratio, intended for projection onto a curved screen). If you look at "How the West Was Won" (available on Blu Ray in it's original ratio) you'll see several very similar compositions. Sadly, MG was never released in Cinerama - it would have been fun.
