Has it got an amazing earthquake scene?

If it does I've been trying to track it down for years and didn't know the title.

yes. a whole valley with a huge gold vein the size of a five story building, falls apart.
I cant believe the Park Service would let them dynamite all of those cliffs to fake an earthquake, so they must be some very good special effects.

Someone just told me they bought the rights to dynamite a whole canyon, and nothing is faked with miniatures. Wouldn't be able to do that today, nor need to.

I read in the trivia the canyon had been declared unsafe so i guess someone had to blow up the dangerous parts.

The information in IMDb has been proven on numerous occasions to be inaccurate. The Trivia statement, "The canyon was purchased as unsafe by the movie company, and actually destroyed on film." is an another example of an inaccuracy. A canyon formed by erosion and weathering -- one that is millions(?) of years old, one that has stood the test of time -- is not something that would be declared "unsafe". Furthermore, its walls could not be brought down by explosives as depicted in the movie. Movie special effects do predate CGI. They might have built a miniature set at the studio to show the canyon being destroyed.

The Wikipedia topic for Mackenna's Gold does not mention that the canyon was destroyed. If an event as monumental as the destruction of a canyon having two vertical walls happened, I'm sure the article would have covered it. I know what you're thinking -- how can one trust the accuracy of Wikipedia? I'll put my trust in Wikipedia over IMDb anyday.

The 'canyon was destroyed' statement is just another urban myth.

Not sure about the entire canyon but there is at least one or two scenes where you clearly see the demolition explosions going off BEFORE the walls collapse.

Now was it the same canyon and were other things just SFX ?
Well, that's Hollywood. But several butresses WERE blown.
You can see it.

I remember reading that the canyon itself that was destroyed was a miniature , which was unstable and barely lasted long enough to be filmed for the movie. The movie production company probably used wide angle lenses to enlarge the view of the miniature .

reply

Yes, the canyon was a miniature and very little explosive charges removed the fake slabs of stone from the walls and if you watch closely the slabs don't crumble as actually they should, that means they are not made of stone.
very very good visual effect or special effect or whatever they are.

reply

yeah-a miniature about 15 feet tall by 50 feet wide////you cans see some shots that look small and fake but the canyon walls are a masterwork of British special effects

reply

huh-i always thought they were well done special effects

reply

I thought that they were also fantastic special effects. In fact that sequence is the best scene in the entire film IMHO.
