I caught this movie late one night on IFC. I was surprised at how much I liked it, especially Dustin Hoffman's awkward mannerisms and staring. The acting seemed to be very different than any I'd seen in other movies. I'm surprised at how little I've heard of this movie and of how few know it exists. Was it popular when it came out? Do any of you know of any movies that are similar to John and Mary?

Agreed. It's an excellent film with two fine performances and some deft storytelling. Hoffman and Farrow made a great pair. I don't think it's an overstatement to call it criminally underrated. It certainly deserves a blu-ray release as it's beautifully shot, designed and edited. And i would certainly love to know more about the making of this fine film.
