Ending on the beach with landing craft

All the discussion about endings suggests that none of the alternate endings was filmed - yet I have a still vivid memory of the ending I think I saw when the film first came out.
It's night. Croker and the gang make landfall on the English coast in landing craft, in camouflage dress and blackened faces as commandos. As they're preparing to unload the bullion Croker reports to Bridger, who calmly informs him that a high level deal has been done between Bridger and the mafia that the money has to stay in Italy and that they're to take it back.

I swear I saw this ending - don't think I have the imagination to have made it up - but ever since then, I've been looking out for it, thinking there must be an original cut still in existence.

Does this ring any bells with anyone??

It was a dream or hallucination of yours. No such scenario has ever existed for this film.

I think I have read somewhere that there was either a mooted ending where they got the gold back to England only to find Bridger had done a deal with the Mafia and they had to give it all back, or that this was going to be the premise for a sequel. Or it might have been the ending in a novelization of the film, I can't quite remember. But it was certainly never filmed.
