Good slow movie

I always think of Rod Steiger as a sub Brando.A not handsome one if you like. Which is not bad as itself. A method actor anyway, i guess. The movie was better then the bad rewiews i read before. In some ways reminded me Planet of the Apes (my favorite movie). The period, the music (Goldsmith), the male butts, even the spaceship in the rain chapter.
Everyone seems to repeat their dialogue lines more then once.
Gotta check Robert Drivas cos never seen him before or after.
Not a masterpiece but a good one never the less. Kind of a cult one.
The DVD has an interesting 10 minutes vintage featurette.
Sci fi not always means action. This one is in the line of 2001, Planet of the Apes or even Silent Running. Kind of intelligent.Makes you think.

I think it was a bit too slow

Good point about Steiger. He certainly was Brando-esque, but in many ways he had a more interesting later career because he seemed more willing to let himself go.

This is the type of film that constituted sci-fi in the late '60s, and I much preferred it to the blockbusters that would dominate eight years later – very cerebral and cautionary, with nary a light saber in sight.

Kind of "hard sci-fi".

reply

Indeed. Sci-fi today has become largely escapist fare, but that certainly doesn't apply here.
