DVD

I really wish MGM would release The Green Slime as part of their Midnight Movies collection on DVD, especially since it's one of their own releases! I would love to see a nice widescreen copy along with the trailer and trivia tidbits they always have. I love my VHS copy, but it's not going to last forever!

I second that and I don't even have a VHS copy of it. I just love the movie and everytime I walk into BestBuy I ask if they have heard of a release date. Of course they always say NO.

This will be the day that you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow.

That DVD is probably from Showa Video. Their quality varies. I would much rather see an offical, top of the line release!

You can still find good condition videos of the excellent MGM VHS release for $15 - $20 US. Try an amazon.com search and don't forget to check their zShops listings too. Anyone peddling a "DVD" on eBay is using that video as their source, or re-burning somebody else's job of the same.

I would image that the reason their has not been a re-issue for DVD has to do with royalty payments for the musical score, specifically the title song, which would need to be re-negotiated. I think this would make a fabulous double DVD release with PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES by Mario Bava, which they had a release of at one point as well.

Warner Bros has the rights to it, and I heard they have getting a lot of requests to put in on DVD. Look for it next year, I guess.

There is a company in Japan called R3 that has an excellent DVD of the 77 minute Japan version that has an insane booklet with it. The print is correctly scoped at 2:35:1, but sadly Japanese language only. Not even an English subtitle, which is understandable since it's missing about 1/6 of the American version. It's almost a different movie with more sci fi action and less drivel about romance: In fact, the amount of time missing from the Yankee fullframe print is probably exactly accounted for by the missing subplot scenes. And there is a LOT more model work, or rather there is more of an emphasis on it, especially at the beginning & end.

So it's not a cut version, but a sort of pared down "distilled" version. Ms. Paluzzi's screentime is about half as much, but that means more time for the cool stuff like fighting the slime -- And the widescreen shots of the model/miniature effects are *GORGEOUS*. It's less cluttered more than cut, and what was intended for the Japan market so this is their version, we can glom onto one if we want but whining won't help make it longer or talk in English. Do a google search, a favorite outlet of mine is "cdjapan", and you can expect to pay upwards to $50 for one because that's just how much DVDs cost in Japan + shipping. Region 2 NTSC pressing so you'll need a wordlwide or codefree deck too, but boy am I glad I ponied up. BEWARE OF REBURNS! I encountered one clown who was trying to hawk a 2 disc set with both the widescreen Japan print and the fullframe US version on what was obviously to me a DVD-R. The Japan version is a single disc release and there is no US DVD.

Stick with the one from Japan, it's gorgeous and has the trailer and a slideshow bonus too. The only bummer note is that the Japan version does not have the wacked out theme song, only an orchestrated score. Aww!

Here is the link to the Japanese DVD at CD WOW:

I can't justify $40 when there are no english subtitles, though.

They showed this at my local cinema of strange...the chauvel cinema. Now I wish I could get a DVD of this and a bonus special feature with just the title song by itself.

The print I saw was the American one and it had gone red so there was no
Green Slime.

If this is the 2 disc edition I am thinking of you should jump on it if you still can. They made a super print. One disc is the cut Jap version in it's full 2:35:1 ratio only in Japanese. HOWEVER the second disc is this same version BUT IN english (and uses the english green slime title screen) and it adds the additonal 14 mins (that were in the english version) back into the film (though that footage stays fullscreen). This also includes 2 trailers and a still gallery. This edition was made by wtf-film. SO if you do still see this on ebay and want the best ultimate version available, ignore that its a dvdr and get the disc. It is the only way to get a proper english version of the film

there is a bootleg dvd from a company called cryptflicks. the dvd doesn't have any special features but the trailer is on youtube.

There is a beautiful and I mean BEAUTIFUL print of this available on DVD at totallyvintagecollectibles.com. It is a letterboxed crisp colored US version. I purchased it for 6.99 plus shipping and I am absolutely astounded at the quality I got for the price.

BTW Warner Bros. Now Owns This Title Not MGM, and they have stated it is not slated for any recent releases here in the states

www.totallyvintagecollectibles.com does not seem to exist now!
Despite myspace declaration: "April 30, 2009 - Thursday
New Website Up And Running"

There is a totally_vintage_collectibles in eBay, but seems
almost inactive.

Pity, entropy wins again!

reply

Well, for whoever doesn't already know, "Green Slime" is officially available on a made to order DVD over at the Warner Archive site (Warner Bros).
