I missed the beginning

This was on Encore Westerns tonight. I missed the first half of it. Can anyone tell me why the townsfolks were so against the marshall (Widmark)? What would have caused them to do what they did at the end?

The film opened with the widow, Claire (Lena Horne) escorting a coffin onto a train.

Then it went back a shoot-out, with someones husband, Widmark won, then to Claire asking the Marshall if the guy had died and what he was going to do. I never figured out why people were so upset over the shooting of that man, which led to so many more deaths.

Carroll O'Connor played pure evil.

I definitely need to watch this again.

The Truth is out there.

Also they want to get rid of the marshall because he knows all the towns dirty secrets and they dont want his gunfighting ways anymore....but they really are the bad guys, not the marshall.

The Sheriff was ambushed in the stables by a town drunk. The sheriff had apparently slept with the man's wife 16 years earlier and now the man, in a drunken state, was taking pop shots at the sheriff.

In the gunfight, the sheriff was forced to shoot the man in self defense. This, however, was the 13th man the sheriff had killed in his 20 year career.

The town council, wanting a more peaceful and modern image for the town, wanted the hardened and rough sheriff out so they could invite new industry, etc.

The Sherrif refused to resign, so the town sought other measures to try and remove him, ultimately resorting to violence.
