Am I remembering something that was never said?

My memory of watching this film on TV about thirty years ago is that, at the start, a German officer refers to a bridge over the Rhine being almost captured by the Americans, using the word "yards." I distinctly remember thinking to myself (ignoring the obvious fact that German officers don't speak English when talking amongst themselves) that Germany had been on the metric system for decades, and thus the character should have used "meters."

Yet, when I saw the film the other week, the officer DID use the word "meters."

Am I remembering a goof that never happened? Perhaps because I almost EXPECTED Hollywood to get it wrong, and thus "heard" what I thought SHOULD have been said wrong?

I saw the film in original theatrical release, and I don't recall that part. I doubt that they would change something that trivial, but anything is possible in Hollywood. Given that the US Army itself was already using metri when the film as made, I doubt they would have said "yards".

I can't tell you how many times I think I remember dialogue verbatim from movies I've already seen only to find out I was remembering wrong when watching it again. Used to bug me, but I finally accepted I didn't have a photographic memory after all.

Plenty of dialogue gets remembered wrong--Cagney never said "you dirty rat," Bogart never said "play it again, Sam."
