No Garands fired

I loved the UA/MGM gunfire sound effects in TBAR (see the TV show COMBAT! or THE DIRTY DOZEN for similar SEs), but noticed that virtually all the US small arms fired on screen were carbines. A few GIs carry Thompson SMGs. and one man has a BAR; but the few M1 Garands appeared to be non-firing props. The same is true in KELLY'S HEROES. Also: when Sgt. Angelo encounters the Hitler Youth in the inn, both carry German MP40 machine pistols-but Angelo's chopper sounds like Vic Morrow's Tommygun (COMBAT!), while the kid's identical weapon sounds like the film's German MG42 GPMGs.

That's Hollywood for you. What you described is very common in many movies depending on prop availability and desired sound effects. Frequently many firearms will have distinctive firing signatures chosen for cinematic aural effect and also associated with characters.

Yep m1s are very scarce in old war movies as are mausers for the Germans
