Always wondered.............

In a lot of pictures, movies, and so on showing London during ww2, there are windows criss-crossed with masking tape*. Can anybody tell me why? If it's to guard against being cut up by shards of glass it's probably doimg an excellent job, but if you're buried under a layer or two of rubble the advantages seem kind of academic.

* masking tape, sticky tape or whatever the British refer to it as.

It was to prevent or rather minimise glass shards being blown into a building in the event of a near miss. A direct hit would obviously destroy all or part of a building but even the blast from a near miss could cause considerable damage.

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

It was done to the windows of Robin Hood infant school too, because of mining subsidence.
