The film is now owned by Rialto Pictures in the USA. Most of Rialto's films have been released on DVD by... CRITERION! Expect a Criterion DVD of this amazing film in the coming months (it may not be until early next year, though) with extra features.

Every Melville films should be on region 1 and UK region 2 DVD. Superb, unique films.

They were waiting on a restoration to allow a theatrical presentation. According to Pierre Lhomme, the cinematographer, the VHS version was a mess, and the negative had faded and had missing scenes. I saw the restored version screened today. They made a digital intermediate with the color-corrected. scratches removed, etc.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

Rialto's restoration of this film just started to play theatrically at New York's Film Forum. I would expect the Region 1 DVD to eventually be released, but probably not until late 2006 or early 2007.

UK DVD later this year from the British Film Institute, who have already released Les enfants terribles; Le Doulos; Leon Morin, Pretre; and Le cercle rouge, all with great transfers and extras.

However, we are still waiting for subtitled DVDs of:

Le Deuxième souffle (1966)
L'Aîné des Ferchaux (1963)
Deux hommes dans Manhattan (1959)
Quand tu liras cette lettre (1953)
Silence de la Mer (1949)

The restored version has been released on dvd in Finland, I bought it
through ebay.

Includes english subtitles, which probably means that it will be released
in the UK soon.
