Army of Shadows on a top ten of 06?

I'm not sure really how to play this one, though maybe I shouldn't even really give a crap either way. I've seen Melville's Army of Shadows, and want to put it in my top ten list, but does it really seem right or correct to put it on a top ten list of 06 where even though its been released in America for the first time this year it came out in 1969? I usually don't take issue with this if the film I want to put on my top ten list is recent (i.e. I put City of God on my top ten of 03 even though it's an 02 movie, or Oldboy on my top list of 05 even though it's an 03 movie). So does it count really, or am I just thinking about this too much?

What I want to know is if 37 year old French films are allowed to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

that's a good question. i'm not aware of any academy rule which would disqualify it. its official u.s. release is 2006; it played for paid admission for at least seven consecutive days in l.a.; it has not previously been shown on television...am i forgetting any? we may very well see this among the titles in the academy's list of eligible films at the end of the year.

Personally, I'm usually somewhat of a stickler when I make "Best of the Year" lists. I'll probably include it as a "special mention", myself.

Newsweek just rated it the best film of 2006!

the year the movie came out anywhere, is the year the movie should be associated with. i hate it when people say well this movie was made in 69, but only came out in america in 06. is america the only place in the world??

reply

as long as it encourages people to see the movie!

Actually, i didn't really like it very much. I honestly thought it would be better, but found it a bit vague.
