Those Lysander Aircraft!

Another post claimed that they must have been the only two actual Lysanders flying but when I saw the film I had my doubts and later checked my library.

There are at least three detail differences between the screen aircraft and the actual Lysander. The Lysander's wing struts are doubled, the tailplane sits low on the fuselage and the windscreen differs. I admit the wing was very similar.

I thought the screen aircraft may have been a Fairchild 24 (Argus) but that doesn't really fit.

Has anyone identified the aircraft used?

Stop looking! The aircraft are Stinson Reliants.

Whatever the aircraft is, it is a model. If you watch the French trailer supplied on the Criterion disc, you clearly can see the wires from which the plane hangs. For the film, I suspect, the guys over at Criterion beautifully airbrushed the lines in the background.
