How will they explain Maria leaving?
Or will they even bother to explain it?

1. They kill Maria off. Obviously that would be horrible. If we thought that Big Bird had trouble with Mr. Hooper, one can only imagine what would be the fallout of that.
2. They have Maria get divorced. Just as bad. Some might argue even worse.
3. She and Luis retire and move to Florida, or the like. Of course, that would predicate the loss of Luis as a character as well, and again, Big Bird would be crushed to see his long time friend leave like that. Maria's been a staple on 'the street' for some 45 years. Even Mr. Hooper was only around for 15 or so.
4. The character stays, but she's always off screen. For example, Luis may enter a scene and throw off a line to a non-visible Maria, etc. That sort of thing has been done before on t.v. In fact, it's been done on 'Sesame Street'. They have made occasional references to Linda, and Linda hasn't been seen on screen for years.
My personal hope is for number 4. The first two don't bear thinking about, and the third would require Luis to go, and I don't think that his actor is ready to do so.
How bout Maria gets a job in Puerto Rico?
Or, since Maria and Louis aren't daily regulars anyway, they could always film scenes with Maria and Louis NOW, and just scatter them over the next few years until Louis retires. Sesame Street is notorious for repeating scenes anyway.

I don't even know I don't even know if they will figure out how they will explain it, i don't know if they will kill off her character, or say she retired from the fix-it shop and just stays home, and not seen.
shareWhat is this, The Sopranos? Killing off Maria is out of the question. There's no way it will happen. I can't believe so many people are even considering that option as a possibility.
shareWell that is what normally happens, remember the character Mr. Hopper they killed off the character when the actor died, even through I know that this is different. I don't even know how they will explain it, or if they will bother to. What do you think they are going to do hire another actress to talk over the character?
shareMr. Hooper's death was somewhat forced on the writers, since it was real. But Maria has been on the show nearly 50 years and is far too iconic for them to rudely kill her off simply because she's retiring. Replacing her would be pretty pointless as well, since they'd have to use an actress who was around the same age anyway, which means she too would soon be retiring.
I'm thinking they will find some excuse for her character to move from Sesame Street, back to Puerto Rico.
Well this is somewhat forced on them to, I think this is the first person that has ever retired from doing the show, and I think most of the adult cast members are at retirement age where they could stop if they wanted to, at least the ones that has been their longer. Well it would be huge task to replace her, and it easy to kill her off, but I don't think the actress will get offended and who knows what they are going to do since it has been a few days, and I don't know how soon they will get in production for the next season. But you think it has to be soon, since the episodes are taped in advance before they are shown for the first time.
shareYeah, I'm wondering if she is officially retired NOW, or will this next season be her last one?
shareI think so I haven't seen anything in annoucement that this upcoming season will be her last.
shareIn interviews, she has said that she will not be in the upcoming season, thus meaning that we've already seen the last of the character (though she did hold out that she might return for the show's 50th anniversary special).
The natural way for her to leave the show would be for her and Luis to retire from the Fix-It Shop and move away to a sunnier climate. However, that means that Luis would have to go, and I have not heard that he's getting the ax. Being a married couple, one can't very well just have Maria up and move away.
Thanks for the update. I guess that means they'll simply never mention her again. Small children (target audience) won't miss her. It's not like they grew up on her the way we did, lol.
shareLike Judy Winslow from 'Family Matters' or Chuck Cunningham from 'Happy Days'. Just one day they vanish, never to be seen or heard from again.
shareAnd why should Luis be forced off the show because of Maria's departure?
Maybe he wants to continue.
It's going to HBO. Maybe it will be now. Snuffy snuffs Maria. Sweeps!
shareWell in the Trivia section it is listed that in 2012 casting for a new Latino character was announced
And they have tried to get Divorce into the show for years.
Probably what will happen is Maria will go home to Puero Rico to be with a sick relative the way her first boyfriend David left .
He went to be with his Grandmother though when the Actor died no tribute or anything
Maria will be back for the 50th anniversary
Why even concern yourself with it.
I could care less and all we should do is just appreciate all the years she spent on the show and stop fussing with what the writers should do.
Andthatismytwocents, you said:
"And they have tried to get Divorce into the show for years. "
The writers tiptoed around the subject of divorce a year or so ago. A few of the Muppets were drawing pictures of their families. Abby Cadabby drew a picture of her & her mother. When the others asked where her father was, she explained that her parents were divorced. A bit later in that episode, she's upset & talking to Gordon about maybe it was her fault about her parents. Gordon reassured her that it wasn't. He told her that they both still loved her, no matter what.
As far as explaining about Maria's departure from the show, everyone else's guesses are as good as mine. I don't think they'll be killing her off though. (otherwise they'll need to explain death again.) The "taking care of a relative in Puerto Rico"sounds feasible though.
