If he died in '82, then how did the episode where they explain it to Big Bird not air until Thanksgiving of '83? That specific episode is one of my earliest memories but I never realized it aired on Thanksgiving until I was reading the Internet article of 13 of the most heartbreaking scenes ever on tv. I know there's a lag time between filming and airing, but 11 months? How many eps was he not on before they explained it?

There were probably other episodes featuring him that hadn't aired so you expect them to put on an episode about his death the following day?

Because they wanted to air it on thanksgiving.

And the reason why they wanted it aired on Thanksgiving was so that parents could be present to watch the show too and be able to answer any questions their children might have.

I think they had already filmed the season he last appeared in while he was alive so that the next batch of episodes didn't show him but like any cast member they don't all appear in every episode
