The Kooky Space Kook

I mention the episode, THE KOOKY SPACE KOOK, as one of my favorite episodes of "Scooby Doo, Where Are You!" because the best ones had one thing in common. The best scary or creepy episodes took place in a scary, moody, atmospheric background, for example, the dark, deserted, long-abandoned, WWII-era airfield of THE KOOKY SPACE KOOK. Another good episode took place in a dark, deserted big-top circus. It was not an abandoned circus grounds, but for some reason, not active. The episode taking place in an abandoned sanitarium is another good example.

Also the Kooky Space Kook was one of the scarier monsters on the show (at least it scared me when I was a little kid).

Yeah, spot on. SCOOBY DOO WHERE ARE YOU was essentially an adult horror book writer transferring his stories to cartoon animation, slightly watered down to appeal to pre-teens and teenagers, who could enjoy a larger degree of scare but not full-blown horror. Some of the episodes, reveal the episode writer's background skill in fright or horror screenplay writing. I mean, you could take the backdrop of the long-abandoned, WWII-era, airfield and make a real, PG-13 or R rated spook, ghost, or horror film. The eery deserted circus backdrop and the populated, active circus backdrop have actually been used on several occasions in past Hollywood, mystery thriller movies.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to envision the possibilities of developing some of the Scooby episodes into real fright and horror films. Some of the episodes seem to have inspired the popular, one-season only, Kolchak, the Night Stalker.
