Collecting DVD's - Where to start?

Scooby-Doo was an enormous part of my childhood and some of earliest memories where of this show. Growing up on it, it means a lot and I'm really looking to start collecting all the episodes on DVD. However, looking through it, it gets a tad confusing. What I'm wanting to do is basically order these things in chronological order of when they aired. So I was going to start with the "Where Are You?" series, but I have a question about that. Would it be smarter to order those individually or simply order the "Complete Series." I've read conflicting opinions on that. Some say that the "Complete Series" has all the episodes and others want to say they don't for some odd reason.

The "Where Are You?" seems pretty simple, but after that is when it really gets confusing. Looking at all this, when they originally aired, it seems they aired "blocks." Are they released on DVD in full or in "blocks" like they were aired? And again, from reading, there are certain episodes/movies that seem to not be included and/or have not been released, correct?

As I said, it's all very confusing to me. Haha I'm a big collector of television series on DVD and Scooby-Doo being my all time favorite cartoon, I figured maybe I'd look into collecting these. So any help would be so appreciated. I'm pretty excited to my collection started!

Season 3 of "Where are You" was really the tailing end of The Scooby Doo Show. You can search wiki for air dates.

This will be a break down of the matter as best as we could understand it:

The original series of Scooby Doo Where are You, ran two seasons. You can buy that in a complete series set.

The next series is the New Scooby Movies. Due to rights issues WB has only released One Set with a Best Of. More than likely in the future this will probably be completed with a second set if they clear all nine remaining.

Next is the Scooby Doo Show. It ran 3 seasons. You can buy the first in The Scooby Doo Dynomutt Hour set. You'd also get the first season of Dynomutt with them. Season 2 has no complete release yet (but the episodes are up on itunes if you can't wait). Season 3 is released as "Scooby Doo Where are you Season 3" but it is the later incarnation.

Laff-a-lympics is where it gets more complicated. You should buy Spooky Games(what you would look for in stores, online it's been renamed Laff-a-Lympics: The Complete First Collection) it has half the series. While two earlier sets were released in volume format, you'd be smarter to wait out for the second set to accompany Spooky Games (if it isn't coming why bother renaming the first a first collection?)

Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo, with the whole gang and Scrappy) sees it's complete release this April.

The Scooby and Scrappy Show shorts era is even more complicated. The first half of it's first season is on the Scooby Doo Richie Rich Show Volume 1. With that you also get part 1 of Richie Rich Season 1. The rest of Season 1, Season 2 and Season 3 are not on dvd yet (but are on itunes). Due note that while Richie Rich also had a Season 3, the Scooby Season 3 was instead paired with The Puppy's New Adventures. The sets will no doubt continue to release in original format.

The New Scooby and Scrappy Show has not been released on dvd yet but is on itunes.

The New Scooby Doo Mysteries is not on dvd yet either but this one is not on itunes.

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo is on dvd in a complete series format.

A Pup Named Scooby Doo is complete on dvd. You can buy it in volumes or one two series sets.

For after this I only own What's New Scooby Doo, which is can be bought on three season sets. Others can fill you in on get a Clue and Mystery Incorporated. I hated both.

Scooby's original movies are all out on DVD, Boo Brothers, Ghoul School, Reluctant Werewolf, Arabian Nights, Scooby Goes Hollywood.

The Scooby Doo dtv movie series will see it's 23rd movie released this month, all of which you can buy on dvd.

They also have released half hour special episodes on random episode samplers. You'll get one if you buy the Laff-a-lympics set i mentioned above. And you can slso get some episodes from the unreleased season sets early on these. But if you'd rather wait for the season sets, and no care to want to see the new episodes, that's a choice to make. But so far there are five sets with new episodes. The six comes out in May.

One additional note on this in case other's use this. The itunes releases and Sampler sets, do not contain the non-Scooby shows.

The reason why we think they are still tied to Scooby comes directly from Warner Archive's statement of them not touching "Scooby and Scooby-related" shows. That pretty much can only mean the shows tied to Scooby.

While some might have a question of are you sure Dynomutt is included, we should think so, as WA did release Captain Caveman the other show in that block and when people made questions lumping Dynomutt/Richie Rich/The Puppy together they didn't signal out Dynomutt as not belonging on that list.

Of course if you only want Scooby Doo, clearly all this means nothing, but for the sake of feeling complete I wanted to add that.

EDIT: Do remember also that Richie Rich and The Puppy both got one last season after being connected to Scooby each. Fan guesses and based on WB's facebook posts, we assume those respective seasons will eventually surface through Warner Archive, but probably not while WHV is still picking and choosing how soon/long to do their seasons that came first.

Like the op, SD was a major part of my kidhood and ill add still my fave cartoon.
