Daphne.

Anybody else feel like Daphne is a useless character on this show? She never really does anything. It's always Fred that comes up with the plan to catch the ghost or monster and Velma figures out the clues. Sometimes Scooby or Shaggy find some good clues. But Daphne just gets kidnapped or does nothing really. You could just not have Daphne at all and it wouldn't greatly effect the plot.

Other than being eye candy (on a cartoon show aimed at kids, lol), getting captured, and causing accidents, especially when trying to capture a ghose, Daphne was definetly an afterthought of a character. She was there to go off with Freddy; she would find her share of clues and ask questions, which Velma and Fred would answer. And she generally did expository duty by summing up where things stand and ask what next, which Fred or Velma would answer. In a way her role was that of "straight" woman, with little comic touches when being "danger prone". Still she did add something to the show and when she disappeared during the height of the Scrappy era, she, along with Velma and Fred were missed, and it was nice when Daphne was the first to come back. Oddly enough, when she returned, without Fred and Velma around, she got a little more to do.

Daphne was the financial backer of all the gangs mystery quests

But I don't think that was revealed until one of the later incarnations of Scooby Doo. On the original series, Daphne was just part of the gang and we knew little about her other than she was danger prone, got captured a lot, found the occasional clue and fed Scooby the occasional Scooby snack.

I was just joking about her being the financial backer for the gang in the original :) maybe she is dating Fred or is friends with Velma so she'll help her out in school. Was watching it with my niece a few months ago at my brothers an just started making up a story to her about Fred & Daphne always going off together cause they were looking for jewelry/valuables to steal from the houses to sell an Shag & Scooby always raided the kitchen/pantries to acquire food for the gang an keep the van stocked, they had Velma do all the real work to avoid people getting suspicious

Not directly but the first indication Daphne comes from wealth is the Ape Man episode where her Uncle is a famous director. Then in the Zen Tuo episode she bought a expensive mask as if normal.

While these pale into the more direct mentions of wealth in later shows, the ties that bind do indeed go back to the first show.

The Daphne of the WB cartoons was vastly superior to the HB ones.
Not only was she beautiful (and far better animated), but she was intelligent and, when the chips were down, quite brave.

She brought in the little girls. She had nice clothes and Velma was too ugly for the Barbie crowd.

There were several times in the original series where her falling through trap doors or getting kidnapped actually led to clues to the mystery.

Didn't Daphne kind of helpful at some points, plus don't forget that Fred always liked to pair up with her, and at times stick Velma with Shaggy and Scooby Doo, and at other times she would be with Fred and Daphine
