Why Cancelled?
I'm guessing it was cancelled in Jan. '74 because of low ratings and being in the Friday night time slot?

shareFive years was a pretty good run for this show. While there didn't seem to be a real time element throughout the series (graduations, holidays, the regular students moving up through sophomore, junior, senior years, etc.), the series may have been able to go on longer. I think a fitting ending would have been to have Jason, Bernie, Helen, etc. graduate and looking towards their futures. Not sure what happened with Richie or Pam, as they didn't stay for the series run (perhaps they graduated or transferred... in Richie's case maybe they no longer taught Hebrew at Walt Whitman, which caused him to return to his "in-district" school... I guess we'll never know).
shareProbably slumping ratings from what was happening at the time. 1974 was a pivotal year in America. The Watergate scandal and the end of the Nixon administration hastened the end of the youth counterculture that formed in the late 60's, and this show was kind of built around that.
shareRoom 222 was never big in the ratings, only making Top 30 once (Season Three). By the final season, it ranked 67th.
shareFriday night shows on ABC were very popular. Brady Bunch, Partridge Family and Love American Style. I believe Room 222 replaced Here Comes the Brides which ran for only two seasons.
Room 222 just ran out of steam after being on for a few years.
