Benny Hill considered funnier than Monty Python by two TV stations (WOR and WLVI)
Agreed! Hill came from a showbiz and was better suited to comedy and show biz in generel than the rather non-showbiz family Pythons.

shareOh for fuck's sake...
shareExplosive diarrhea is funnier than Ben Hill.
shareLeering at birds in bikinis and running around in circles with the camera sped up gets old quickly.
shareBenny was extremely popular in the U.K. starting in the early days of British television(1950's) and he just kept on getting more popular until he was a worldwide star in the late 70's/early 80's. Yes, the Brits did eventually get tired of his dirty old man persona but Benny did try to become more family friendly which ended up watering down his comedy more than boosting his image.
In short, Benny Hill wanted the single life and date young, attractive women who normally would be unattainable for an average bloke. His comedy reflected his lifestyle and eventually he became persona non grata with his own British audience. However, the rest of the world loved the edited versions of his TV show. They didn't know or care about his personal life.
