I remember when Hee Haw first aired (the winter of 1969) the critics hated it with a vengeance. It was called "a disgrace to the American hillbilly", a "disaster", and so on. Then surprise of surprises, the show proved a winner, developed a definite following, and even when cancelled it was still popular in syndication and literally outlived its critics.

The reason why it was popular in syndication was because the ratings were still good.
shareI still watch it occasionally on RFD-TV. Growing up my mother would have it on (back then there were only the typical five- six channels available) every Saturday. It came on at 6pm every Saturday. My mother would be fixing our Saturday evening tradition of homemade hamburgers, fries (yes, cut up from potatoes), etc. Every Saturday around 4pm or 5pm the local Memphis station had country music programming. Then at 6pm we'd all watch Hee Haw.
Great memories. No, it wasn't rocket science but there isn't much today on TV that is either.
That was my Saturdays as well back in the 1970's. Except sometimes we had Chili dogs. It came on at 7:00 every Saturday night back when I was young 😁
shareMy third grade teacher said of all the programs on television this was the one we should never, ever watch. Of course everyone did. The music teacher loved it and encouraged the students in singing some of the songs!
shareWe had to take our baths while it was on so my ma could watch it in peace. After we got bigger it became pizza night...the pizza guy always seemed to show up with it around pickin' and grinin' time..... I always liked the music and the jokes kind of got better each season....watched it all the way through the '70's....even have the Roy Clark signature guitar with big note song book....it really works and pretty decent quality.

That is why I take critics with a grain of salt. Yes, Hee Haw was corny but it was a family show that was a lot of fun. I am not even much of a country music fan but I liked that show. It is sort of like watching an Adam Sandler film. Yes it is going to be silly, but not everything has to be Shakespeare.
