What was the extent of Peter Max's involvement in the creation of the movie? Did he actually create character designs and backgrounds, or was it just his already existing artwork that they used as inspiration for the artists who actually worked on the movie, to emulate?

According to the commentary, the artists used many style influences. Max himself did not work on or consult on YS.

The art direction was by Heinz Edelmann. His art has a very similar style to Peter Max.
