New restoration on the way

According to head of Mosfilm, Karen Shahnazarov, War and peace is at the moment being restored "frame by frame". This new restoration is probably being to be completed by the end ofthis year, 2016.

It is unclear though if the original 70mm print has been found and used - as it was thought to be lost, or unattainable somewhere in the Ukraine when the previous restoration was made for the DVD release.

Mosfilm then used a, quite damaged, 35mm reduction print, prepared by Bondarchuk in the late 80s or early 90s for showing the film on TV.

It is also not clear if this new restoration are going to be released on either Mosfilm YouTube channel and/or Blu Ray.

Anyway - for me this is fantastic news as it is such a marvellous and important film. It deserves a new and wider audience and to be seen in a better shape than the DVD offered us.

A big thanks to Mosfilm, and I hope it soon will be released on Blu Ray!

This is excellent news! I first saw this when I was at school back in the 60s, saw it again a couple of times in the 70s ... The memory never left me, and I finally managed to acquire the DVD a year or two ago.

So great to hear a restored version is on its way!
