How Did McQueen Get Chosen for This Role?

He had never played a suit before this and he didn't do it again. It seems so counter-intuitive a choice, and yet it works. Or did McQueen simply make the role his own?

Thoughts?

He begged the director for the role. I remember hearing that in the commentary.

Dear Vorenus, I don't **** your wife.

That's amazing. I suppose McQueen really did make this his role, because he recognized himself in the character. I don't think one person in a million would have had him pegged as a cynical businessman.

He's not exactly the traditional 'suit' though, is he?! He's the unpredictable wildcard here that he is in most of his films, and that's why the contrast works so well.

It was originally supposed to go to sean connery but he passed on it and later regretted it. Then as previously stated steve asked for the part

Steve McQueen wanted Hollywood to see him in new types of roles. He wanted Thomas Crown badly. He is smoldering in a three piece suit, cleans up very well, and of course, he can ride a horse, fly a glider, and drive a dune buggy like no other straight business executive. Steve's perfectly cast.
