'Scuse me buddy, but not quite. Not even close to that!
First off, the movie's based on a story by John Cheever, and could presumably be filmed again, since the movie would contain the words 'Based on the story by...' and no one would notice. Secondly, the movie would succeed or fail only if the acting and writing sucked. Third, so many plays are revived all the time on Broadway, why can't Hollywood make remakes of movies? As long as they are well-written and work there should be no problem.
As for Will Ferrel messing it up: Apparently, a remake is going to happen with Alec Baldwin in the role of Merrill (I'd suggest Pierce Brosnan instead, or Daniel Day Lewis.) It'll be made by an independent company, which should keep it from the clutches of Hollywood.
You have no sense of humor.
shareIt amazes me that whenever there's a joke post, someone inevitably takes it seriously. Or maybe that's part of the joke.
sharenah, that guy just didn't get the joke. Nice.
shareSorry, but I'm tired of all the bitching about remakes, and I overreacted. If people would treat movies in the same manner they treat plays, it would be a lot better for them mentally and emotionally. Cheever's story is great, and it deserves to be told again, without people bitching about how it will be messed up.

shareIf I am or not is for me to decide-you have to make me laugh first, or say something funny that will make me laugh. Otherwise, it ain't happening.
shareHmmm,let me give it a try :

How's that, laughing yet?
I'm picturing Will Ferrell wearing a ton of scuba gear as he flits from pool to pool. Or Vince Vaughn can start the film totally blitzed and drown in the first scene. Comic gold!
shareAlec Baldwin in a bathing suit for two hours? Be great if it was a comedy. Seriously, part of the original movies appeal was Burt Lancaster's great physique. It always seemed that there was meant to be a contrast between Lancaster's fit body and his character's troubled mind.
