Its metaphor of life is so sadly well documented
those events are the ashes many lives leave behind after death
and Burt Lancaster's character has all the issues and weaknesses all of us have
there should only be movies as valuable as this

Couldn't have put it better myself. It's one of my favorites. I just heard that Criterion is release the movie on Blue-Ray
