Was Ned a lonely man?...

Is that theme of this movie? A lonely man tries to understand his loneliness, his alienation from others and society by taking repeated dips and then stopping to talk poolside with whoevers about life.

"Ready when you are, Mister DeMille."

The final scene would certainly appear to confirm that contention, if earlier sequences hadn't already provided enough evidence.

My take is, that he's not as much lonely, as it is that he wants to re-enter a social circle that he's no longer a part of, and is no longer available to him.
